Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
SAN ANGELO - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings swept the San Angelo Colts behind a dominant starting pitching performance from Julio Castro as the 'Wings blew out the Colts 9-0.
Castro, who had a no-hitter going through five innings, surrendered just two hits through six innings as no runs crossed the plate on his watch.
Offensively, the WhiteWings outscored the Colts 39-10 during the series. It's the first series win for the WhiteWings since 2000 - the same year the WhiteWings won their last championship.
The WhiteWings now head to Canada for the North American League championship in a best-of-seven against either the Edmonton Capitals or the Calgary Vipers. All seven games will be played in Canada.
After a scoreless game through the first five innings, the WhiteWings broke through in the sixth, putting four runs on the board to take a 4-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Gabriel Ortiz hit a three-RBI double to clear the bases and give the Wings a three-run edge. With the bases still loaded, starting pitcher Brian Henschel hit Leivi Ventura, forcing another run home to give the WhiteWings a 4-0 advantage.
The WhiteWings then put the game - and the series - away in the next inning. Scoring four more runs in the seventh inning, the WhiteWings took a commanding 8-0 lead. Ortiz again got the scoring started with an RBI double to make it 5-0. RBI singles from Welington Dotel and David Peralta made the score 7-0 before an error allowed another run to score.
The Colts only mustered up five hits against WhiteWings pitching as they failed to get a runner in scoring position until the seventh inning, at that point trailing 8-0.
