June 12, 2005 - Northern League (NL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release
The Northern League announced today that seven players from the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Edmonton Cracker-Cats have been suspended for their roles in the on-field incident that took place on Friday, June 10 at Edmonton's Telus Field.
The incident took place in the fifth inning of Friday night's game, when Edmonton pitcher Trevor Marcotte hit Winnipeg batter Russ Jacobson in the head with a pitch. Jacobson charged the mound, and a benches-clearing altercation ensued.
Eight players were ejected from the game as a result of the incident: pitchers Darwin Soto and Carlos Torres, infielders Max Poulin and Ralph Santana, and Jacobson for Winnipeg and pitcher Reggie Rivard, infielder Stubby Clapp and Marcotte for Edmonton.
Seven players have been suspended for at least one game for their roles in the incident and subsequent altercation.
Marcotte has been suspended for 10 games for hitting Jacobson in the head and thus instigating the altercation. With his release by Edmonton on Saturday, Marcotte will be required to serve the suspension immediately if and when he joins another Northern League team.
Torres has been suspended for four games, effective June 12, for leaving the bullpen and kicking an Edmonton player during the altercation.
Rivard has been suspended for two games, effective June 13. Four other players, Jacobson, Poulin, and Santana for Winnipeg and Clapp for Edmonton have been suspended for one game each as follows:
Max Poulin and Stubby Clapp: Suspended for game of June 12
Russ Jacobson: Suspended for game of June 13
Ralph Santana: Suspended for game of June 14
Soto and the other seven players were also fined an undisclosed amount for their actions.
The suspensions are subject to appeal, in which case they will be held in abeyance until the appeal is heard by Northern League Commissioner Mike Stone.
