Memphis Redbirds News Release

Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis never held a lead Tuesday afternoon until the end when they scored three runs in the ninth inning to complete a four-game sweep of Omaha thanks to an 8-7 win.

Two singles and two walks in the ninth had knotted the game at 7-7 before Rico Washington came to the plate. Washington lifted a fly ball to left-center field that landed on the warning track to score Travis Hanson from second base. Washington's two-out, walk off-single was his second hit of the day. Rick Ankiel started the rally with a walk and was followed by a Jolbert Cabrera single and a walk to Travis Hanson. Pinch hitter Tagg Bozied's single drove in two runs and tied the game before Washington's heroics.

Four different Redbirds collected two hits each, including Ankiel who hit his team-best seventh home run in a five-run sixth inning. Shane Costa paced Omaha's 17-hit attack with four hits of his own while six different Royals had multi-hit games.

Kelvin Jimenez picked up the win in relief for the Redbirds. He pitched a perfect ninth inning on four pitches to earn his first win of the year. Kenny Ray was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs on three hits in 1.2 innings. Memphis starter Matt Ginter slipped off the hook after giving up five runs on 13 hits in 4.2 innings.

The 'Birds will enjoy their first off day of the season tomorrow before resuming their homestand on Thursday when the Iowa Cubs come to town. Memphis will send Blake Hawksworth to the hill to face Iowa's Angel Guzman in a 7:10 p.m. game.
