Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, CA - Grizzlies starter Tim Lincecum earned his third win of the season as Fresno defeated the Tucson Sidewinders 7-1 in game one of a Monday night double-header. Lincecum came within two outs of throwing a seven inning no hitter.
With a 1-0 lead in the second inning, Lincecum ran into his biggest jam of the season. The 22 year old started the inning by walking the leadoff hitter, then hit Tucson third baseman Brian Barden in the hand with one of his 96 mph fastballs. After a wild pitch that advanced both runners, Lincecum surrendered his first run of the season on second baseman Matt Erickson's sacrifice fly that tied the game 1-1.
After getting out of the jam, Lincecum experienced another first. In the bottom of the second inning, Lincecum got his first hit of the season on a line drive to center. The hit was also his first as a professional player. Later in the inning, the Grizzlies took a 2-1 lead when Lincecum scored on shortstop Luis Figueroa's RBI double.
On the mound, the right-handed Lincecum went six and one-third innings without giving up a hit while surrendering a run on six walks and four strikeouts. Lincecum also helped his winning cause by scoring twice and going two-for-three at the plate. Billy Sadler relieved Lincecum with one out in the top of the seventh, promptly allowing a single to Matt Erickson to break up the no-hit bid. He recovered quickly to cinch the combined one-hit effort by getting Jeff Salazar to fly out with the bases loaded.
"This is the first time in my career I have ever had to take a pitcher out with a no-hitter going," said Grizzlies manager Dan Rohn. "That's the way it is."
The Grizzlies' offense extended their lead to 7-1 after scoring three runs in the third and two more in the sixth. Four Grizzlies had at least two hits as Fresno had 10 hits on the night. Luis Figueroa went 3-for 4 with a double, RBI and a run scored. Fred Lewis knocked in a run and scored a run.
