Strong Pitching Highlights Sidewinders Doubleheader Split In Fresno

April 24, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Fresno, CA - Tim Lincecum tossed a near no-hitter for Fresno in game one and D.J. Carrasco was solid for 5 1/3 innings in game two as the Tucson Sidewinders and Fresno Grizzlies split a doubleheader on Monday night at Chukchansi Park. Fresno won the opener 7-1 and the Sidewinders took the nightcap 3-1.

Lincecum, the number one prospect in the Giants organization, did not allow a hit over 6 1/3 innings in his start but was pulled two outs short of a no-hitter because he had reached his pitch limit. The right-hander walked six and struck out four on 97 pitches. He allowed his first run of the season on a Matt Erickson sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning.

Fresno roughed up Sidewinders starter Enrique Gonzalez for seven runs in his 5 2/3 innings of work, although only one run was earned. Gonzalez (1-1) walked six and struck out six and allowed nine hits.

The Grizzlies had a 7-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning as Lincecum took his shot at the no-no. He retired Alex Romero on a groundball to third but walked Mark Johnson and was immediately pulled in favor of Billy Sadler. Sadler allowed a clean single to center off the bat of Erickson on the first pitch he threw to end the no-hit bid.

Chris Carter went 0-3 to snap his hitting streak at 15 games.

Pitching was again the story in game two as D.J Carrasco had his best outing of the year. Carrasco allowed just a single run on four hits while striking out five in his start and Bill Murphy and Chad Harville slammed the door shut to give Tucson the split.

The Sidewinders scored three times in the first inning against Grizzlies starter Brian Bowles. Rich Thompson reached on an error by William Bergolla to open the game and Jeff Salazar hit his team leading fourth home run of the year to put the Sidewinders on top 2-0. Donnie Sadler added a RBI single later in the frame to push the lead to three.

Carrasco retired the first seven hitters he faced before Justin Knoedler reached on an infield single in the bottom of the third. Knoedler scored on Clay Timpner's double to left-center for Fresno's only run of the game.

Salazar and Sadler each finished 1-3. Brian Barden went 2-3.

Bill Murphy and Chad Harville supported Carrasco (1-1) with terrific work out of the bullpen. With runners at first and second and one out in the sixth, Murphy was summoned to face Fred Lewis and struck him out. Harville took over and struck out Scott McClain on three pitches to end the inning and got the final three outs in the seventh for his fifth save in as many chances.

Harville has worked 7 2/3 innings this season and has not allowed a hit or a run. His five saves are tied for second in the PCL.

Jamie D'Antona went a combined 0-3 in the doubleheader but reached base in both games to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 17.

The Sidewinders and Grizzlies will wrap up their four game series on Tuesday night at Chukchansi Park. The Sidewinders have not announced a starter for the game although it is expected that several relievers will combine for the outing. Fresno will start right-hander Matt Kinney (1-1, 4.15). First pitch is at 7:05 and the game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50.
