Redbirds Lose Rain-Soaked Game in Toledo
June 25, 2021 - International League (IL)
Memphis Redbirds News Release
TOLEDO, Ohio - In a game that was delayed twice and eventually ended early because of rainy skies, the Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A affiliate, Detroit Tigers) outlasted the Memphis Redbirds by a 5-3 final at Fifth Third Field on Friday night.
The game was supposed to start at 7:05, but was delayed by nearly an hour and a half due to rain. The game was then delayed again by about 20 minutes in the top of seventh due to a passing rain shower. The two teams finished the top of the seventh before torrential rains came one more time, and the game was finally called in the bottom of the seventh.
For the second straight night, Toledo (24-21) got the early jump on Memphis. The Mud Hens plated three runs in the bottom of the third on four hits, highlighted by a two-run home run from Renato Nuñez. The night was far from over for Nuñez - he slugged another two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. The former Baltimore Oriole finished the evening 3-4 with two home runs, a double, 4 RBIs and 10 total bases.
The game remained 5-0 until the top of the sixth, when the 'Birds began to battle back. First, with the bases loaded and two outs, a wild pitch completely eluded the Mud Hens defense and allowed both Conner Capel and Juan Yepez to score. Then, Rayder Ascanio slapped a single into left field, scoring Tyler Heineman from second base.
Unfortunately, the rains came and halted Memphis' comeback effort. However, before that, Tyler Webb worked a quality relief outing, tossing two scoreless and hitless innings with three strikeouts.
The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
