St. Paul Saints News Release

COLUMBUS, OH - The St. Paul Saints had their ace on the hill in Charlie Barnes, who had the second best ERA in Triple-A East at 3.10, but some bad luck in the second inning cost him to the tune of six runs. That proved to be too large of a hurdle for the Saints as they lost 7-2 on Friday night to the Columbus Clippers at Huntington Park.

With the game scoreless in the second, Daniel Johnson took the first pitch he saw from Barnes and deposited it over the right-center field wall, his ninth of the season, to make it 1-0 Clippers. The next two hitters, Owen Miller and Nolan Jones, reached on infield singles that went a collective 120 feet. A walk to Gabrial Arias loaded the bases. On an 0-2 pitch Barnes hit Gavin Collins to force in a run and make it 2-0. With one out, Oscar Mercado walked to force in another run and make it 3-0. A bases clearing double by Andres Gimenez finished off the six-run inning.

With two outs in the third Barnes got more bad luck when Arias hit a little tapper between the mound and home. Barnes pounced on it, but his throw to first tailed into the runner as Arias took second on the single and throwing error. Collins followed with a single to left-center making it 7-0. Barnes went 5.0 innings allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out four.

The Saints lone offense came in the fourth as Mark Contreras was hit by a pitch with one out. Damek Tomscha followed with a double down the third base line putting runners at second and third. JT Riddle knocked them both home with a single to center. The Saints would wind up with only four more base runners the rest of the way: a walk to Roberto Peña in the fifth, a fly ball double by Sherman Johnson that was lost in the lights by left fielder Oscar Mercado in the seventh, and a single and walk to Contreras and Riddle, respectively, in the ninth.

The bullpen was once again masterful as Ian Hamilton tossed 2.0 hitless, shutout innings while walking one and striking out four. Derek Law struck out the side in the ninth. The bullpen has now gone 17.1 consecutive scoreless innings.

The same two teams meet in the fifth game of the six-game series on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. central time at Huntington Park. The Saints send LHP Bryan Sammons (0-1, 7.11) to the mound against Clippers LHP Kirk McCarty (5-1, 4.53). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
