Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders made a strong, late charge but fell to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 6-3 on Friday night at Coca-Cola Park.
The IronPigs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Darick Hall sacrifice fly against Deivi Garcia. They sent eight to the plate and added four more in the bottom of the second to take a 5-0 lead.
The right-hander lasted only 2.0 innings on the night, allowing five runs on five hits, walking two and striking out one. It was the third time in Garcia's (1-3) last four starts that he allowed five earned runs.
Braden Bristo allowed a run but struck out four in the bottom of the third, but the RailRiders bullpen settled in. Bristo, MLB Rehabber Justin Wilson, Greg Weissert and Trevor Lane combined to retire 11 straight IronPigs batters at one point.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre put runners on base in every inning, but finally broke through in the top of the eighth against the Lehigh Valley bullpen. The RailRiders loaded the bases with one out, and a Socrates Brito sacrifice fly brought in Estevan Florial to narrow the gap to 6-1.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, Andrew Velazquez drew a walk and Florial followed with a two-run homer to center off former RailRider Brady Lail, but that was all SWB could muster.
Florial finished with a strong game, going 1-for-2 with two runs scored, a home run, two RBIs and a season-high three walks. Greg Allen picked up an infield single in the contest to extend his on-base streak to 20 consecutive games.
The RailRiders continue their six-game set with the IronPigs on Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. with coverage on the RailRiders Baseball Network beginning at 6:15 p.m. LHP Matt Krook (0-0, 0.00) gets the start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, while Lehigh Valley answers with RHP Adonis Medina (3-4, 5.26).
The RailRiders return home to PNC Field on Tuesday, July 7 to begin a series with the Syracuse Mets. For tickets and more information, call (570) 969-BALL or slide to www.swbrailriders.com/tickets.
