Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Memphis Redbirds defeated the Charlotte Knights in the team's first road game of the season on Tuesday night at Truist Field in Charlotte.
The Redbirds scored most their runs in the top of the fourth inning, bringing nine batters to the plate. In the inning, Memphis scored six runs on six hits to take the lead after trailing 2-0.
With two out and two runners on base, shortstop Cory Spangenberg hit a home run off of the railing atop the left-center field wall. The three-run homer was Spangenberg's first of 2022 and first RBIs of the season.
Center fielder Ben DeLuzio added insurance in the top of the ninth, ripping a single up the middle to bring in Ali Sanchez and make the score 7-2. Memphis would rally for two more in the inning and won the game 9-2.
Matthew Liberatore (1-1), who earned his first win of the season, settled in nicely after giving up two runs on five hits in his first two innings of work. To end his five-inning start, the left-hander retired 11 of the final 12 Knights he faced, striking out five of them. In total, Liberatore struck out six and did not walk anyone.
Memphis relievers worked tremendously on Tuesday night. Blake Parker threw a scoreless sixth, followed by Packy Naughton's two scoreless frames. Zach McCallister finished the game with a scoreless ninth to secure the win.
Memphis (4-3) returns to Truist Field on Wednesday night to take on the Charlotte Knights (3-4) at 5:35 CDT.
