Buffalo Bisons News Release

ROCHESTER, NY - Gabriel Moreno added early offense and a defensive gem to help lead the Buffalo Bisons to a 6-4 win over the Rochester Red Wings on Tuesday night at Frontier Field.

A host of players made their Bisons debut on Tuesday, with Gosuke Katoh at second base, Josh Fuentes was added to the roster prior to the game and was at third base, and while Thomas Hatch started his first game of the season - going 3.1 innings giving up two runs on six hits - no debut was bigger than that of Moreno, the Blue Jays top prospect, who batted second and started behind the plate.

He wasted no time making his presence felt, recording hits in his first two at-bats, making a nice play on a fading pop-up in foul ground in the bottom of the first, and then gunning down a runner trying to steal second in that same frame.

The Red Wings boasted a host of ex-Blue Jays in this one, including Richard Ureña, Carl Edwards Jr., and Tyler Clippard, but none more familiar than Aaron Sanchez, who got the start and pitched five innings of three-run ball. After the Bisons' six-through-nine hitters all reached base in the second, plating two, it was a Moreno single to right that drove in the third run to go up 3-0.

The Red Wings came back slowly, scoring runs in the third, fourth, and fifth, before Fuentes came around to score in the sixth on a fielder's choice to put the Herd up 4-3. A one-out triple by Luis Garcia of the Red Wings in the seventh was followed by a Jake Noll double, allowing Rochester to tie the game once again.

Samad Taylor got things started for the Bisons in the ninth with a leadoff single, and after a Vinny Capra walk pushed him to second, was able to score on an L.J. Talley base hit to put the Bisons back out in front. Capra then tacked on an insurance run, giving the Herd a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. Kyle Johnston came on and closed out the win on just three pitches, giving the Bisons their fourth win in their last five.

Tomorrow night's game will see Casey Lawrence back on the mound for his second start of the season against righthander Cade Cavalli, the top prospect in the Washington Nationals organization according to MLB Pipeline. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. EST.
