Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - First baseman Seby Zavala launched his first home run of the season, but the Charlotte Knights dropped Tuesday's home opener to the Memphis Redbirds by a score of 9-2 from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte. The Knights welcomed 8,425 fans to Truist Field on Opening Knight.
In the second inning, Zavala put the Knights on the scoreboard with a solo home run. His 418-foot blast gave the Knights an early 1-0 lead. Zavala finished the game with two hits. Left fielder Mark Payton added an RBI double in the second inning to give the Knights a 2-0 lead at that point. Unfortunately for the Knights, that's all the team would muster on Tuesday.
LHP John Parke (0-1, 7.71) started for the Knights and was saddled with the loss. After throwing three no-hit innings to open the game, Parke gave up six runs in the fourth inning. The six-run inning was highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Cory Spangenberg.
Charlotte LHP Kyle Kubat came on in relief of Parke and pitched three impressive innings, allowing just one hit. The Omaha, NE native struck out five batters while walking just two Redbirds.
Memphis LHP Matthew Liberatore earned the win after he allowed just two runs on six hits over five innings of work. In the ninth inning Memphis added three more runs to pull away from the Knights on Opening Knight in Uptown Charlotte.
The Knights will continue the series against the Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals) at 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday night. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday night. The game will also air live on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and www.CharlotteKnights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time team broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action.
