Maine Celtics News Release
PORTLAND, ME - In anticipation of their inaugural season, the Maine Red Claws, presented by Quirk Chevrolet, today unveiled their team uniforms for the first time. The announcement was made by Red Claws Chairman Bill Ryan, Jr.
The jerseys were brought to the crowd waiting along the Portland waterfront at Bell Buoy Park in a style befitting Maine's Team - by lobster boat. The boat, provided by Catch a Piece of Maine, a Portland-based lobstering company, carried two athletes well-known to Maine basketball fans, Matt Clement, a former Lawrence High School and Maine Maritime standout, and Jamaal Caterina, a former Deering High School and University of Southern Maine star and Maine's 2001 Mr. Basketball. Clement and Caterina modeled the Red Claws' home and road jerseys as well as their shooting shirts. The former Maine high school standouts both are expected to attend the Red Claws' Northeast tryouts this fall.
"We are thrilled with how our jerseys came together," said Ryan. "They are the combination of classic styling with Maine influences that we envisioned. With "Maine" emblazoned across the front of our road jerseys, fans in every city we play in will know exactly where we are from and who we represent - the Red Claws are Maine's team, and we want everyone to know that. The NBA and adidas took what we wanted to say and turned it into exactly the jersey we were looking for."
The jerseys were designed in partnership by the Red Claws, NBA and adidas, and both the home and road jerseys feature adidas' classic three stripe look. The home white jersey includes the team's "Red Claws" word mark in red outlined in green while the red road jersey sports "Maine" in white outlined in green. The shorts of each uniform feature the logos of the Red Claws' NBA parent clubs, the Boston Celtics and Charlotte Bobcats, on the left leg with the Red Claws' iconic mascot Crusher on the right with "NBA D-League" scripted above it. The shooting shirts are gray with Crusher located at center chest.
"The Red Claws' uniform is a great symbol of the team, the state, and the fans, and is one that all Mainers can be proud of. The design of the uniform shows how color can communicate a strong message that unites a team and its fan base," said Christopher Arena, Vice President, NBA Global Merchandising Group. "The use of 'lobster' red, combined with green accent colors representing pine trees, unites two of the State's iconic symbols. The addition of the 'coastal rock' gray shooting shirt featuring the team's mascot, Crusher, gives fans of all ages a way to show their team and state pride."
MATT CLEMENT: A 6'7", 230 lb. center, Clement was a standout at Lawrence High School and Maine Maritime Academy, where he was the North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year in 2004. Following his studies at MMA, he began working at the South Portland offices of VTech, a company specializing in telecommunications and electronic learning equipment. After attending a pro combine in Florida in 2007, Clement received an invitation to play for the Washington Generals but instead opted to play professionally in Ireland.
JAMAAL CATERINA: A 6'6", 210 lb. forward, Caterina was a star at Deering High School and was named Maine's 2001 Mr. Basketball. After beginning his college career at American University before transferring to the University of New Hampshire, Caterina returned home to Portland to complete his college eligibility at the University of Southern Maine. Following college, he played in the United Kingdom with the Worcester Wolves.
