
Record crowd sees chiefs sweep doubleheader

Nomar goes 1-for-4 with two RBI in game one Peoria, IL - A franchise-record crowd of 9,004 came to O'Brien Field Wednesday night as the Peoria Chiefs swept the Dayton Dragons in a doubleheader by scores of 7-3 and 5-1. Nomar Garciaparra went 1-for-4 with two RBI in game one. The Chiefs have won three in a row and improve to 14-19 on the half, 49-54 overall.
In game one, the Chiefs scored twice in the 2nd inning as Sam Fuld tripled down the right field line to score Bo Flowers. Fuld scored one batter later on a groundout from Alan Rick to give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead. Dayton tied the game in the 4th inning on a home run from Jeremiah Piepkorn after BJ Szaymanski singled with two outs.
The Chiefs took the lead for good in the 5th inning on an RBI single from Eric Patterson to score Aaron Smith for a 3-2 lead. Peoria broke it open in the 6th inning with four runs. The highlight of the inning came on a two-run single to right-center field from Garciaparra that scored Drew Larsen and a hustling Patterson from first base to give the Chiefs a 7-2 lead.
Matt Weber came within one out of a complete game, going 6 2/3 innings and picking up his 5th win of the season. He allowed three runs on five hits in beating Dayton for the second time this season.
In game two, Dayton manufactured a run in the top of the 1st inning as Drew Anderson singled to start the game and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Cody Strait. Anderson then stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly from Szymanski to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. The lead was short-lived as the Chiefs tied the game at 1-1 when Ryan Harvey doubled and scored on an error.
Peoria scored twice in the 2nd inning to take a 3-1 lead. Oscar Bernard hit a run-scoring single and later scored as Larsen reached on n infield hit. The Chiefs added two insurance runs in the 6th on another RBI from Bernard, who reached on a fielder's choice to score Harvey. Joe Simokaitis followed with a run-scoring single to give the Chiefs a 5-1 lead that would hold up as the final score.
Jerry Blevins made his first professional start in game two and picked up the win to move to 3-5 on the year. He allowed one run on three hits over five innings. Michael Phelps picked up the his first professional save in two scoreless innings of relief. James Morrison pitched a complete game in taking his fourth loss of the season. Pepsi Player of the Game
Game 1 - Matt Weber (RHP) / Eric Patterson (2B) - Weber carried a perfect game through 3 2/3 innings before going 6 2/3 innings and winning his 5th game of the year. Patterson was 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored from first base on a Garciaparra single.
Game 2 - Jerry Blevins (RHP) - The right-handed pitcher made a spot start in game two of the doubleheader and pitched well, going five innings and allowing just one run. He moves his record to 3-5 on the year.
Notes... Eric Patterson had his ten-game hit streak snapped in game two after an 0-for-3 effort...The Chiefs will go for the sweep in the series finale Thursday night at 7 PM...They have not swept an opponent in 2005...The Chiefs have won eight straight games at O'Brien Field against Dayon dating back to 2003...Thursday is a Budweiser Thirsty Thursday and Dukes of Hazzard Night...The General Lee will be on display...Nomar Garciaparra is expected to be in the lineup...Gates open at 6 PM...listen to the game live on 1350 WOAM and at www.peoriachiefs.com.
