Burlington Bees News Release

Grand Rapids, MI (July 27, 2005) - The West Michigan Whitecaps (19-14, 52-51) scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Burlington Bees (20-13, 54-49) 2-1 at Fifth Third Ballpark tonight. Bees' closer Chad Blackwell gets charged with the blown save and the loss, snapping a streak of ten consecutive successful save conversions and a streak of six consecutive winning decisions going back to April 30.

The Bees scored their only run in the top of the first. Irving Falu led off the game with a single to left and Ed Lucas executed a perfect hit and run with a base hit to right that moved Falu to third. Damaso Espino then blooped a single into right field to drive in Falu. The hit extended Espino's hitting streak to seven in a row and he collected his first RBI since July 19th. Whitecaps' starter Jair Jurrjens scattered four more hits over six full innings while striking out five. Lavon Lewis (2-0) finished the final three innings in relief and allowed just one hit while striking out two and ended up with the victory.

The Bees got five shutout innings in a spot start from RH Gabe DeHoyos. DeHoyos allowed two hits and two walks while striking out a career-high seven in just the second start of his career. Yovany Damico pitched two scoreless innings in relief and came back out for the bottom of the eighth. Chris Robinson led off with a single and Adam Rowe replaced Damico. Rowe got a ground ball from Clete Thomas and a force out of Robinson at second, but then walked Nick McIntyre. Blackwell replaced Rowe and got Jeff Frazier to hit a groundball to get a force at second and leave runners on the corners with two outs. Blackwell got out of that jam with a strikeout of Brett Dlugach.

In the bottom of the ninth, Blackwell walked Luis Sabino to start the inning and Jody Roughton moved Sabino to second with a sacrifice bunt. Matt Parrish struck out swinging for the second out, but Brooks Colvin came through in the clutch with a base hit to left to drive in Sabino. Darwinson Salazar's throw from left went all the way to the backstop and Colvin moved up to second. Robinson was next and on the first pitch, he rolled a double inside the first base bag to drive in Colvin and give the Whitecaps the win. Tonight was the first time in 38 games this year that the Bees lost when leading into the ninth inning.

The Bees and Whitecaps wrap up this series tomorrow night at 6:00 Central at Fifth Third Ballpark. RH Luis Cota (3-4, 3.48) will start for the Bees against RH Matt Righter (4-1, 3.28) for the Whitecaps in place of Josh Rainwater who has been scratched because of a blister. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:40.
