Peoria sweeps double header from Dayton

Chiefs win 7-3 and 5-1, Dragons winless at O'Brien Field since 2003

Peoria, IL- The biggest crowd in the history of O'Brien Field, 9,004, went home happy on Wednesday. Chicago Cub fans got to watch Nomar Garciaparra play shortstop for the Chiefs and pick up a two RBI single. Soccer fans got a glimpse of Mrs. Garciaparra, a.k.a. Mia Hamm and Peoria Chiefs (14-19, 49-54) fans got to see the home team roll over the Dayton Dragons (14-19, 44-59), sweeping a double header 7-3 and 5-1.

Peoria jumped on Dragons starter Jon George (L, 5-6) with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Bo Flowers led the inning off with a walk as George got ahead 0-2 and missed on four consecutive pitches. Sam Fuld tripled into the right field corner scoring Flowers for a 1-0 lead. Alan Rick followed with a grounder to second base that plated Fuld for a 2-0 lead.

Matt Weber (W, 5-8) was cruising right along for the Chiefs retiring the first 11 hitters he faced and carrying a perfect game through 3.2 innings. B.J. Szymanski blooped a two out single to left for the first Dayton hit of the night. Jeremiah Piepkorn followed with a two run homer that just cleared the wall in left center to tie the game at 2-2. The drive was Piepkorn's 13th of the season and 54th and 55th runs batted in.

George was saddle with the loss, as the Chiefs took the advantage with a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The first of two Eric Patterson runs batted in gave the Chiefs a 3-2 lead. Peoria would break the game open off Alexander Farfan (ND) who was knocked around in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Chiefs picked up four runs off the right hander, all earned, including a two RBI single by Nomar Garciaparra that brought the standing room only crowd to its feet.

The Dragons picked up an unearned run charged to Weber in the seventh inning. Tim Layden (ND) came on to close the game out in a non save situation.

Dayton sent James Morrison (L, 0-4) to the mound in the second game against the Chiefs Jerry Blevins (W, 3-5), in the battle of the bullpens. The Dragons got on the board in the first inning on a Drew Anderson single, a sac bunt, a stolen base and a sac fly from B.J. Szymanski. Peoria tied the game in the bottom of the first inning on a Ryan Harvey double, a Jesse Schmidt infield single and a throwing error by Anderson at second base. The unearned run tied the game at 1-1.

In the home half of the second inning Peoria added a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead. Oscar Bernard's RBI single scored Anthony Granato who doubled to left with one down. An infield single by Joe Simonkaitis put runners on the corners with one down. Drew Larsen's RBI fielder's choice got Bernard home with the second run of the inning and a 3-1 Peoria lead.

Blevins pitched 5.0 innings to pick up the win, scattering three hits and allowing only one run striking out five Dragons and walking only one. Michael Phelps (SV, 1) threw 2.0 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the save.

The Chiefs added insurance in the bottom of the sixth inning for the second time in as many games in the double header picking up a pair of runs to go up 5-1. The Chiefs loaded the bases against Morrison with none down. Bernard picked up an RBI with a fielder's choice that scored Harvey, who led off the inning with a single. Simonkaitis picked up his second hit of the night with an RBI single to right field that put Peoria up 5-1. The four run advantage was more than enough as Phelps got the Dragons one, two, three in the seventh to pick up the save.

The Dragons and Chiefs wrap up the four game series at O'Brien Field Thursday night. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries the game live, beginning with the pre game show at 7:30 PM, Tuesday's first pitch is scheduled for 8:00 PM. LHP Omar Segovia gets the start for the Dragons, while Peoria will counter with RHP Grant Johnson.
