
Reading Tops Thunder

(Reading, PA)- Reading Starting Pitcher Pedro Martinez struck out 11, and Reading scored the go-ahead three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to surge past Trenton 8-4 on Wednesday night from First Energy Stadium in Reading, PA. Reading had an all-time high crowd of 9,953 at First Energy Stadium.
Trenton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Martinez. Shortstop Eduardo Nunez connected on a two-out home run off of Martinez to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. The home run was Nunez's eighth of the season, and second in the last three games. Reading countered with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning by Outfielder Dominic Brown off of Thunder Starting Pitcher Jeremy Bleich (2-5). Reading struck for three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. With one out, Left fielder Michael Spidale doubled. Right fielder Dominic Brown followed with an RBI double to put Reading on top 2-1. Later in the frame, Third baseman Neil Sellers delivered a two-run home run to increase the lead to 4-1.
Trenton battled back with three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4. Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci singled to start the inning. After a strikeout by Center fielder Austin Krum, Second baseman Reegie Corona singled Vechionacci over to third base. Corona stole second base, and an errant throw by Catcher Tim Kennelly advanced Corona to third base to plate Vechionacci and cut the deficit to 4-2. An infield single by Nunez scored Corona to make it 4-3. Nunez finished the game 2 x 3 with two runs, a home run, and two RBI. Trenton tied the game at 4-4 on a throwing error by Brown. Reading went back on top with three runs in the sixth inning. Shortstop Ozzie Chavez had an RBI single in the frame, and Reading scored two runs on an error by Vechionacci. Reading tacked on a run in the seventh inning on an RBI triple by Kennelly. Kennelly had three hits in the win for Reading.
Martinez struck out 11 batters and did not walk a batter. He yielded five hits and four runs (three earned) over six innings to pick up the win. The 11 strikeouts were the most for a Reading Phillies Starting Pitcher this season. Offensively, Trenton struck out a season-high 13 times in the game. Bleich gave up 11 hits and seven runs (five earned) in five-plus innings to take the loss.
Trenton and Reading will play the rubber game of the three-game series on Thursday night. RHP Lance Pendleton (0-1, 12.46) will start for Trenton against Reading RHP Vance Worley (7-8, 5.11). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
