Altoona Curve News Release
PORTLAND, Maine - For the fourth time this season, the Altoona Curve were fruitless in their bid for a season-high fourth consecutive win falling to the Portland SeaDogs (AA - Boston Red Sox) on Wednesday night at Hadlock Field 9-0.
Curve pitching walked a total of nine batters, one shy of their season high, and hit one as the Curve also committed two crucial errors in the defeat. Additionally, Altoona proceeded to go just 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position in the loss.
Starter Kyle Bloom lasted just 3.2 innings as the lefty walked five, one shy of his career-high while allowing four runs (two earned) to cross the plate. After the first two runs scored, Bloom induced what would have been the inning-ending ground ball to shortstop Brian Friday, but Friday's throw went wide of second base and in to the right field corner on an attempt at a force play allowing two additional runs to score.
Portland would tack on one run against reliever Jeff Sues before plating four runs off of reliever Jared Hughes.
With the loss the current Curve "Road to Savings" program remains at $1 off Grandstand and Terrace Level seating for the Thursday, August 13 game versus Portland at Blair County Ballpark. For more details on the Curve Road to Savings program, log on to AltoonaCurve.com.
The Curve will look to grab the rubber match of the three-game set on Thursday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. Righty Derek Hankins (3-3, 4.28) will toe the rubber for the Altoona Curve while RHP Adam Mills (9-5, 4.57) will oppose. Radio Coverage begins at 11:45 a.m. on flagship station ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and Curve Radio Network affiliate stations.
NOTES: ** 2B Shelby Ford played in his first game since being received from Indianapolis (AAA) on 8/5. Ford batted eighth and went 0-for-3. ** RHP Jared Hughes made his first appearance since 5/16 vs. Akron. The righty spent 73 days on the DL with right elbow soreness. Hughes appeared out of the bullpen and it was the first time the Pirates' fourth round draft choice in 2006 has pitched in relief. Prior to Wednesday's outing, all 76 of Hughes' career appearances came as a starter. ** 1B/OF Miles Durham extended his hitting streak to 13 games - one game shy of his career-high of 14 -- going 2-for-5. Durham has now hit in the last 20 games in which he has been penciled in the starting lineup. ** Jason Delaney enjoyed a 2-for-5 night at the plate, extending his hitting streak to six games. Delaney is now 10-for-25 over that span.
