B-Mets Pitchers Strike Out a Season-High 16 Senators in 4-2 Win

Eric Niesen struck out a season-best 10 hitters over five innings and Ruben Tejada slapped three hits for the second straight game as the B-Mets overtook Harrisburg 4-2 at Metro Bank Park Wednesday night. The 16 strikeouts recorded by Niesen, Jose De La Torre and Connor Robertson bested the 14 punch outs that Binghamton's staff tallied against Portland April 16.

For the second straight game, the B-Mets jumped on Harrisburg in the first inning. This time lefty Aaron Thompson was victimized in his first start since being traded to the Nationals by Florida. Jose Coronado led off the frame with a walk and Ruben Tejada followed by pushing a bunt for a base hit to the right side. After Josh Thole flied out to center, Coronado scored on a Thompson wild pitch that advanced Tejada to third with Ike Davis at the plate, making it 1-0.

Davis came up with an RBI single to score Tejada and would later score two hitters later on a Jonathan Malo two-out, RBI single, which pitted Binghamton (41-67) a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, Joel Guzman drove a two-strike pitch from Niesen into the gap in left-center to score Ofilio Castro who had singled earlier in the frame, cutting the deficit to two.

Harrisburg (50-58) moved within a run in the fifth on a solo homer from Bill Rhinehart, his tenth of the season.

The B-Mets tallied for the final time in the eighth against Senators reliever Cory Van Allen. Davis singled down the third-base line and was moved to second on a groundout to the pitcher from Caleb Stewart. A Jonathan Malo flyball down the right-field line moved Davis up the third where he scored from on an infield single hit by Emmanuel Garcia, making it a two-run game. The hit for Garcia ended an 0-22 slump.

Niesen picked up the win after allowing two runs in five innings, his second of the season with Binghamton. De La Torre tossed three scoreless innings and set a new season-high with five strikeouts. Robertson followed with his eighth save in as many chances by throwing a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Thompson was hung with the loss after surrendering three runs in five innings to drop his first start with Harrisburg.

The win ended a four-game losing streak for the B-Mets and results in a rubber match set for Thursday night. Binghamton will send RHP Dylan Owen (3-7, 5.65) to the bump tomorrow and RHP Erik Arnesen (6-4, 3.16) goes for the Senators. The first pitch is slated for 7:00 and the radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:45 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
