Reading Slips Past Bakersfield 3-2
February 21, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
Reading, Penn. â Brad Church's second of the night snapped a tie score and gave the Reading Royals a 3-2 win over the Bakersfield Condors in front of 6,569 at the Sovereign Center on Saturday night.
Bakersfield had the early advantage in physical play and scoring opportunities, and eventually took the lead. Andrew Ianiero swung around a rebound and slipped it past Reading starter Peter Hamerlik for a power play goal at 5:06. After that, Reading settled down and took over. The pounded nine of the last 10 shots of the period in on Joe Watkins, who stopped all 11 shots faced to hold the lead after 20 minutes.
Reading tied the game during the second period with a rebound goal by Kent Davyduke at 13:59. Late in the middle period, a goalmouth scramble resulted in the net coming off and Jason Ralph being given a delay of game penalty. The Royals scored on the advantage with just 44 seconds remaining to take the 2-1 lead. Watkins stopped 15 shots in the period, including two breakaways.
The Condors tied the game up at 2-2 in the third period, with Kevin Riehl tucking home a backhander for his 19th of the season at the 6:53 mark. Bakersfield continued to play a strong period, but the Royals power play proved fatal again. On a two-man advantage, Church deflected home his second of the night and 22nd of the season to beat Watkins for the eventual game winner at 12:38. The Condors pulled their netminder, but couldn't get the equalizer, losing 3-2. Reading improved to 19-1-3 on home ice this season.
The Condors head back to Atlantic City for a Sunday match at 11:05am PDT.
