Kevin Bergin put the contest away for the Roanoke Express with his fourth round shootout goal in a 3-2 shootout victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators on Saturday night in Roanoke. Gwinnett opened the scoring as Rick Emmett took a centering pass in the slot and ripped a shot past Roanoke netminder Jason Wolfe on the power play. Kevin Doell hooked up with Brandon Dietrich to set up the goal at 13:04 of the opening period.

Carl Mallette tied the game up at one goal apiece when he rolled the puck over Gladiators netminder Trevor Prior at 15:56 of the first period. Kevin Bergin and Dan Carney each added assists on the goal as all three players crashed the front of the net looking for a rebound to jam home.

Roanoke took a 2-1 lead on a deflection by Dan Carlson with 37 seconds left in the second period. Carlson and Rick Kowalsky both got a stick on a slap shot by Duncan Dalmao from the right faceoff circle to redirect the puck past Prior late in the period.

Steve Slonina tied the contest up at 2-2 when he stepped out of the penalty box and took an outlet pass from Paul Flache and shrugged off a Roanoke defender and beat Wolfe on the break at 3:55 of the third.

Neither team could capitalize in the overtime session while Gwinnett could not solve Wolfe in the shootout in the loss. Dan Carlson had the deciding goal in the shootout.

Trevor Prior made a season high 43 saves in the loss while the Gladiators fall to 30-18-5 on the season in the shootout loss.
