Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Reading, PA) - Philadelphia Phillies top pitching prospect RHP Kyle Drabek (7-1) tossed seven strong innings on two runs and seven hits as the Reading Phillies (56-45) took game 1 of the series 4-3 over the Sea Dogs (49-52) on Monday night at First Energy Stadium. The Sea Dogs remain one game behind the Trenton Thunder for the second playoff spot in the Northern Division.
RHP Chance Chapman worked a perfect ninth inning to seal the win and earn his first Double-A save. CF Josh Reddick flied out to the warning track for the third out.
The Sea Dogs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on LF Ryan Kalish's solo-homer over the right-field wall. Reading tied the game in the bottom of the second inning on a 2-out infield single by RF Gus Milner to score LF Kevin Mahar.
In the third inning, RF Tim Kennelly walked with one out and scored on a 2-out RBI double by DH Jeremy Slayden. In the fifth, Portland SS Yamaico Navarro laced a triple to left-center field and scored on RF Reid Engel's ground out to first base. Slayden made Doubront pay for a second 1-out walk to Kennelly by doubling him home to give Reading a 3-2 through five innings.
Doubront (6-3), who suffered his first loss since May 5, did not have a strikeout through five innings and yielded four hits, three runs and tied a season-high with four walks.
Reading capitalized on 2B Ryan Khoury's throwing error to score an unearned run and take a 4-2 lead in the seventh inning. RHP Chris Province plunked Kennelly to start the frame and Slayden reached on a fielder's choice. On the play, Khoury's throw was off the mark and hit the shortstop's (Navarro) glove to put two runners on with no outs. Mahar hit into a 5-4-3 double play but 3B Neil Sellers socked a run-scoring double off the left-field wall.
Portland nabbed a run off Reading's bullpen in the eighth inning but stranded the bases loaded. Reddick greeted LHP Jason Mackintosh with a walk and scored on C Juan Apodaca's double over the leftfielder's head, cutting the deficit to 4-3. After Anderson walked, RHP Francisco Butto entered the game and walked DH Jon Still but retired Navarro on a pop out to third base.
Portland continues their 4-game set with the Reading Phillies on Tuesday night at First Energy Stadium beginning at 7:05 PM. RHP Blake Maxwell will take on LHP Joe Savery, who leads the Eastern League in wins (12).
