Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves road struggles continued on Monday night at Canal Park as they were shut out by the Akron Aeros, 9-0, in the opener of a four-game series.
Akron struck first in the bottom of the third against Erie starter Jon Kibler and never looked back. The bottom three in the lineup, Carlos Rivero, Jerad Head and Mikey Hall reached on consecutive singles to give Akron its first run as Rivero scored to make it 1-0. Cristo Arnal sacrificed the runners into scoring position for Jesus Merchan. Merchan hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Head for a 2-0 lead.
Akron would go ahead 3-0 in the fourth when Beau Mills hit the first of his two home runs in the game.
In the fifth, Hall drew a one-out walk off of Kibler and Merchan singled with two outs to put two on for Nick Weglarz. Weglarz singled home Hall for a 4-0 lead. Merchan would score on a wild pitch, putting the Aeros ahead 5-0.
Erie would have no luck against Akron starter Ryan Edell who gave up just four hits in seven innings of work. Casper Wells extended his hitting streak to 15-consecutive games with a leadoff double in the second and a two-out triple in the fourth. Erie would fail on both attempts to bring home the run.
The 'Wolves, trailing 7-0 in the seventh, loaded the bases on Edell with a walk by Alex Avila, a single by Santo De Leon and a walk by Andy Dirks. Edell worked out of the jam by inducing an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Ron Bourquin.
Akron would hit three home runs in the sixth and seventh innings and go ahead 9-0 which would be the final.
Kibler (6-6) gave up seven runs on 10 hits in six innings of work. It was the most runs he had given up since June 2 against Altoona when he gave up a season-high eight. Kibler walked one and struck out two in the losing effort. His record against Akron is now 2-1 with a no-decision in four starts.
The loss dropped the SeaWolves to four games behind the first place Aeros in the Southern Division. Erie is now 12-4 in the season series with Akron and 2-3 at Canal Park. The 'Wolves have also dropped to 20-28 on the road.
