Akron RubberDucks News Release

Throwing a Curve...The Altoona Curve took their first series from the Aeros in six tries this season, taking the rubber match of the three-game series at Canal Park yesterday afternoon by the final score of 7-3. A five-run first inning sparked the Curve to the victory, as they smacked two singles, three doubles, and a triple against starter Bobby Livingston to improve to 7-14 vs. Akron. The game got exciting late however, as the Aeros trimmed the deficit with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings thanks to a solo home run from DH Beau Mills and an RBI double by 2B Cristo Arnal, respectively. Akron was then on the verge of tying the game or taking the lead, but left the bases loaded in both the sixth and seventh innings (part of an 0-9 performance with runners in scoring position). Carlos Santana socked a pinch-hit homer in the eighth to cut the margin to 5-3, but Altoona put up two in the ninth against reliever Josh Judy to provide the final margin.

You Say Potato...The Aeros and home plate umpire John Conrad didn't agree on much yesterday and the crew chief's strike zone was no exception, as Conrad ejected three Aeros in a three-batter span in the bottom of the sixth inning for arguing balls and strikes. Mills was the first to go after getting rung up with runners at first and second and one out in the sixth, and manager Mike Sarbaugh was close behind as part of the same dispute. 3B Jerad Head then drew a walk to load the bases, but RF John Drennen struck out looking at a curveball for the final out and slammed his bat at home plate, prompting Conrad to toss him also. The lone bright spot from the quarreling was that Santana got to hit in the eighth, and his dinger made him just the second Aero this year with a home run in three straight games (Nick Weglarz did it June 23rd-25th against Trenton). Current San Diego Padre Kevin Kouzmanoff holds the franchise record with a homer in four straight games July 16th-19th in 2006.

Crystal Cristo...The only Akron player to collect two hits Sunday, Arnal also recorded just his ninth extra-base hit in 70 games overall this season as he doubled to right field in the fifth inning. His single to left field in the seventh gave him his ninth multi-hit game in 54 contests with the Aeros and he also extended his hitting streak to five games, one shy of his season-high.

Here Comes Erie...The second-place Erie SeaWolves come to town tonight to open a four-game series at Canal Park, and the Wolves enter having claimed 12 of the 15 meetings between the clubs. Erie has used the long ball to climb within three games of the Aeros entering play tonight (Akron's smallest margin since June 6th), as the SeaWolves lead the league with 119 home runs this season and 37 in just 23 games this month. Yesterday's loss also dropped Akron to 33-33 over its last 66 games, as the club started 28-8 and remains 20 games over .500 nine weeks later. The Aeros dominated the league early with a 2.84 team ERA in their first 36 contests, but they now have a 3.84 mark since (dating to May 20th).
