New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats of the Eastern League made two roster moves over the past weekend, and each involved a southpaw reliever. The associated details are as follows:
LHP Jose Lugo, the 25-year-old native of the Dominican Republic who leads the Eastern League in bullpen appearances, has departed New Britain for Triple-A Rochester in the International League. The rubber-armed bullpen specialist appeared in 50 of the 100 games that the 2009 Rock Cats had played at the time of his promotion. The 6'0" /160-pound resident of San Pedro, D.R. compiled a 4-2 record - with 3 Saves and a deceptive 4.19 ERA - in his fifty 2009 appearances in New Britain. Lugo's 2:1 ratio of Strike Outs to Bases-on-Balls was another factor in favor of his advancement. Originally signed by Oakland, the slender southpaw was taken by Minnesota in the 2005 Rule V Draft. This is his first promotion to the Triple-A level.
LHP Spencer Steedley, a 24-year-old native of Charlotte, NC, has joined the Rock Cats from Ft. Myers in the Single-A, Florida State League. The southpaw is a product of the University of Charlotte, where he both pitched and played the outfield. Steedley was selected as a Pitcher by Minnesota in the 25th Round of the 2007 Draft. The former 1st Team Atlantic-10 Conference standout promptly achieved All-Star status in both the Midwest (2008) and Florida State (2009) Leagues. The 6'2"/194-pound lefty made 35 appearances for the Miracle in Ft. Myers this season, posting a 4-0 record with 6 Saves. His 1.79 ERA and 46 Ks/18 BBs were additional factors in favor of his first advancement to the Double-A classification.
Both moves were effective Sunday, July 26th.
The New Britain Rock Cats are the Double-A, Eastern League affiliate of the American League's Minnesota Twins.
