Defenders Fall 6-0

July 27, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

BOWIE, MD- Connecticut hit the road yet again Monday night looking to rebound after a frustrating showing last week but things continued to go south for the Defenders as Bowie shut them out 6-0 at Prince George's Stadium.

2B-Paco Figueroa's RBI fielder's choice in the sixth proved to be the game winner as the Baysox took game one of the best of four series. Bowie added an additional run in the sixth with a double steal to take a 2-0 advantage.

Connecticut faced off against Bowie's ace, LHP-Brian Matusz (7-0) and passed up on their only opportunity of the game in the fourth inning with runners aboard. Matusz received the defensive play of the game by 1B-Eric Corzier as he dove to his right to stop a 3B-Ramon Castro groundball on a hit and run which held 1B-Brett Pill at third. Matusz would walk the next batter loading the bases but get out of the jam unscaved. Matusz finished tossing seven scoreless innings of four hit ball, walking three and striking out six while remaining undefeated.

Bowie blew the game open in the sixth inning scoring four runs off of five hits and took advantage of one of three Defenders errors in the game.

RHP-Geivy Garcia (0-3) suffered the loss in his first start of the season hurling four hitless innings, allowed two earned runs, walked four and fanned a season high six.

Connecticut and Bowie will tangle again tomorrow in game two at 7:05pm. Game two's matchup has highly touted prospect RHP-Madison Bumgarner (7-1) going up against Bowie's RHP-Radhames Liz (4-1).
