Reading Clinches Kelly Cup Playoff Berth with Win over Peoria

Reading, PA – Reading scored their fastest goal to a start a game this season, just ten seconds into the contest, and skated to a 2-1 victory over Peoria. The win put Reading atop the North Division ahead of Atlantic City by a point and clinched Reading's second playoff berth in team history. The Royals continue to rewrite the record books under Derek Clancey setting new highs in wins in a season (41) and have a chance to claim their first regular season division title.

Cail MacLean recorded his fourth goal in three games ten seconds into the opening stanza. David Masse and Jon Francisco assisted on the opening goal. Peoria answered midway through the game, as Rivermen leading-scorer Brian McCullough scored on the power play to even the contest at 1-1. The Royals picked up the game deciding goal with just 59 seconds to go in the period as the puck slid to the high slot in the Rivermen end and Ian Turner blasted it by Mathieu Chouinard. It was Turner's fourth goal of the season and first game-winning goal this year.

Barry Brust was stellar in net for Reading once again, recording his 26th win of the season. Brust stopped 32 shots and several in the closing seconds as Peoria tried to tie the hockey game. The Royals were zero for three on the power play, while the Rivermen were one of two. Peoria fired 33 shots on net while Reading only accounted for 20 in the game.

With the win, Reading improved to 3-0-0 against Peoria in the Sovereign Center. Overall, the Royals are 5-2-0 this season against the Rivermen with the final battle set for this Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Reading Area Community College is handing out Royals beanbag pucks to the first 1,200 fans through the gate. This game marks the eighth and final meeting in the regular season.
