Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads completed its 2004-05 ECHL home season before another sellout crowd Saturday night and put away the San Diego Gulls, 5-2 to complete a three-game sweep. Idaho finishes the home portion of the schedule with a 22-11-3 record in the Bank of America Centre, and ends the regular season with a game at San Diego and two at Bakersfield next week.
The Gulls looked like a team that needed to prove something, and came out playing hard and fast in the early minutes of the first period. So, it was no surprise that San Diego scored first. Brett Draney made a beautiful backhanded pass through a Steelheads defender to Mix Birbraer who shot through traffic and beat Frank Doyle at 7:56. San Diego took a 2-0 lead after Doyle played the puck behind the net, and left it behind for Jonathan Zion who was skating in. But, instead San Diego's Grady Moore picked it up and passed it out to Darren Clark who was waiting in the slot and scored at 12:15. Idaho answered back with two quick goals. First, with one from Scott Burt at 12:33 on an assist from Ben Keup, and the second just 1:21 later from Tim Verbeek who, after faking a shot, smoked a slap shot through Eddy Ferhi's five-hole.
Idaho scored what proved to be the game-winner early in the second period. The Steelheads began the period with a man-advantage for 1:27, and scored with :18 left on the power play. Warren Peters notched his 21st of the year after he played the puck behind the net and banked a shot off Ferhi's skate. Idaho jumped out to a two-goal lead as Mike Stutzel tallied on his own rebound at 5:26.
Late in the third period, Idaho added the final goal. With players in a heap in a huge scramble in the San Diego crease, and the puck squirted out to Tim Verbeek, who lifted a backhander over the bodies on the ice for his second of the game and 8th of the season at 17:31.
Idaho's rookie goalie, Frank Doyle, stopped 20 of 22 San Diego shots for his league-leading 32nd win. Eddy Fehri suffered the loss for the Gulls, and his record is now 13-13-1.
