Rays Steal One from Gwinnett, 5-3

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Scooter Vaughan scored the go-ahead goal late in the third, and the South Carolina Stingrays stole two points from the Gwinnett Gladiators Friday night at North Charleston Coliseum.

Coyotes prospect Chris Rawlings made 25 saves for the Gladiators (1-5) in a losing cause, while defenseman Devon Krogh scored his first pro goal. Former Gladiator Jeff Jakaitis made 20 saves for the Stingrays (5-0-0-1).

Dirk Southern put the Gladiators ahead with just 45 seconds left in the first, blasting a point blank slapper past Jakaitis after the puck took a big bounce off the end wall. Philippe Halley had the helper, and Gwinnett carried the lead into the second.

The middle period saw an offensive explosion from both sides. Krogh scored his first pro goal just 2:08 into the period, lifting a point shot past a screened Jakaitis for a 2-0 lead. Martin Lefebvre and Kurtis Bartliff added the assists. South Carolina answered back with two goals though, with SteveSpinell (11:53) and Patrick Gaul (12:32) bringing the Rays even.

Evan Bloodoff gave the Gladiators the lead again however, firing a low slapshot through the five-hole of Jakaitis at 13:31 with Josh Currie and Maxime Legault assisting. The Rays tied it again at 17:19, as Scott Campbell extended his goal-scoring streak to five games with a slapper through traffic on thepower play that beat Rawlings.

South Carolina took their first lead late in the third, as Vaughan snuck a wrister from the slot through the legs of Rawlings for a 4-3 Rays edge at16:30. Jordan Owens tacked on an empty-netter, and Gwinnett fell by a 5-3 final.
