South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays (5-0-0-1) erased a two-goal deficit and pushed their season-opening point streak to six games and winning streak to five contests dropping the Gwinnett Gladiators (1-5-0-0) 5-3 Friday evening at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Gladiators forward Dirk Southern broke open the scoring with 45 seconds remaining in the first period tapping a bouncing puck past the pad of Stingrays netminder Jeff Jakaitis (W, 21 saves on 24 shots). Forward Philippe Halley picked up the lone assist.
Defenseman Devon Krogh made it a two-goal Gladiators lead 2:08 into the second period from forwards Martin Lefebvre and Kurtis Bartliff. Stingrays defenseman Steve Spinell cut the lead in half with his first professional goal on a breakaway at 11:53 catching a pass from defenseman Kevin Quick after stepping out of the penalty box from serving a cross-checking penalty. Forward Patrick Gaul tied the contest moments later deflecting a shot from defenseman Luka Vidmar past the blocker of Gladiators goaltender Chris Rawlings (L, 25 saves on 29 shots) at 12:32. Less than a minute later, Gladiators forward Evan Bloodoff reclaimed the lead rifling a shot between the legs of Jakaitis from between the faceoff circles. Rookie Josh Currie and defenseman Sacha Guimond recorded assists. Stingrays forward Scott Campbell extended his goal-scoring streak to five games and point-scoring streak to six contests lighting the lamp on a 5-on-3 power play at 17:19 to knot up the game 3-3. Forwards Jack Downing and Chad Painchaud added assists.
Defenseman Scooter Vaughan buried the game-winning goal with 3:20 left in the third period lifting a shot over the glove of Rawlings from the top of the left-wing circle from forwards Painchaud and Chris Langkow. Forward Jordan Owens sealed the victory with an empty-net tally at 19:00 from Quick and Campbell. The Stingrays finished the contest 1-for-3 on the power play while the Gladiators went 0-for-3.
