Orlando Solar Bears News Release
Estero, FL - F Andrew Johnston notched his first goal of the season at 4:29 of the third to even the score at 2-2 and then added a shootout winner to secure a 3-2 shootout win over the Florida Everblades at the Germain Arena on Friday night. G John Curry stopped 34 of the 36 shots he faced in the game, including making a number of highlight reel saves as he improved his record to 2-1-0-0 this season.
Florida jumped out to a quick lead in the game, as F Mike Merrifield redirected a shot from D Austin Levi at 1:42 of the period. Orlando answered to tie the contest just before the halfway point of the first. F Ian Slater and D Colton Jobke teamed up to force a turnover in the neutral zone, and Slater snapped a shot past the pad of G Jesse Deckert to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the second.
The lone goal of the second frame came 10:26 into the period. Merrifield was able to push a puck backwards to F Kellan Tochkin who slipped a backhander inside the goalpost, putting Florida ahead 2-1 going into the third.
Less than five minutes into the first period, Johnston evened up the contest at 2-2. F Tyler Murovich slipped a puck through the neutral zone and Johnston buried a backhand on the ensuing breakaway to tie the game. Neither side scored through the remainder of the third or in overtime, leading into a shootout. F Mathew Sisca scored his second shootout goal in two games and Johnston scored in the fourth round to lift Orlando to the 3-2 shootout win.
