North Charleston, SC - Phil Aucoin's power play goal with 33 seconds to go in overtime proved to be the difference as the Charlotte Checkers improved to 3-0-1 with a 5-4 overtime win. With the overtime loss the Rays fell to 1-1-2 despite scoring 2 shorthanded goals.

With Brad Parsons off for a slashing penalty in overtime, Rory Rawlyk fed Aucoin on the left wing for the winner.

The Stingrays and the Checkers finished the first period tied at 1-1. Rory Rawlyk netted a power play goal at 5:35 of the period to start the scoring, but Robin Gomez intercepted a Checkers pass in the neutral zone and scored on a breakaway short handed at 12:23 to tie the score.

The Rays grabbed a lead in the second when Jeff Legue scored his second of the season. Legue was denied earlier in the period by Charlotte netminder Bernd Bruckler but made no mistake with an Aaron Power rebound with the Rays on the power play at 11:51 of the second.

In the third period the Checkers came out charging, netting three straight goals to take a 4-2 lead. Juris Stals scored the equalizer and the go ahead goal for Charlotte. After the Stingrays fell behind 4-2, JF David scored and then assisted on Legue's tying goal to help the Rays into overtime.

The Stingrays will play Sunday afternoon in Columbia against the Inferno at 5:05. The team will return home to host the Greenville Grrrowl on Tuesday night to start a three game home stand.
