Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - On the night the Reading Royals raised the banner for last season's North Division regular season championship to the rafters of the Sovereign Center, the volume of the sellout crowd seemed to raise the roof of the building a few notches when Rich Peverley scored the overtime game winner mid-way into the extra frame. The 2-1 victory over the Trenton Titans runs the Royals record to 2-0-1=5.

The Royals struck first when Mike Kompon charged up into the Titan zone mid-way into the second period. As Kompon was ridden off by a Trenton defender towards the left wing corner, Royal forward Greg Hogeboom drove the net, where he and Titan goaltender, Scott Stirling collided. Stirling went down, and Kompon had the presence of mind to slide the puck from the corner to the top of the crease, where Eric Werner, who was pinching down from his defensive slot, was able to tap the puck in for his first goal as a pro. Trenton tied things at one at the 4:47 mark of the third period, when Matthieu Brunelle won a battle out in front of the Reading net and was able to force a puck over the body of goaltender Cody Rudkowsky and into the net. The remainder of the third period saw solid defense and bone-crushing body contact, but no more goals.

In the overtime, Rich Peverley stole a puck off the forecheck and was able to walk out in front of the Titan goal and bury a snap shot under the bar to send the 7,024 in the Sovereign Center into virtual hysteria. Next up for the Royals are four consecutive games on the road, starting next Friday in Greenville, South Carolina against the Grrrowl. The Royals 5th Anniversary Season continues at home in the Sovereign Center on Friday, November 11 against the Dayton Bombers. The Royals will be giving away 2005-06 Papa John's magnetic schedules to the first 5,000 fans in attendance. For ticket information including; season, half-season and quarter-season ticket packages call the Royals Hockey Headquarters at 610-898-PUCK (7825).
