Nailers Open Early Three Goal Lead, Hang On To Beat Bombers

Wheeling, WV - The Dayton Bombers dropped a 4-2 decision to the Wheeling Nailers at WesBanco Arena In Wheeling, West Virginia Saturday night. The same two teams meet Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the Nutter Center. Nailers veteran defenseman Terry Virtue opened the scoring with his 100th career goal just 23 seconds into the first period. Kurtis McLean made it 2-0 Wheeling when he beat Bombers goaltender Mike Ayers with a one-timer at 12:22. And Mike Doyle gave the Nailers a 3-0 lead before the end of the first period with his first pro goal at 17:19.

The Bombers began to chip away that lead when Brian Gornick extended his season-opening goal scoring streak to 4 games with a powerplay goal 41 seconds into period two. At 11:27 of the second period, Scott Cameron pulled the Bombers within one, 3-2, when he sent a wrist shot past the stick side of Nailers netminder Andy Chiodo.

Alex Rouleau added a third period insurance goal, and the Nailers won the first of 12 meetings with Dayton this season, 4-2.

The Dayton Bombers, proud "AA" affiliate of the National Hockey League's Columbus Blue Jackets, will celebrate their 15th Anniversary this season.
