Lynx come from behind to drop Ice Pilots 3-2
October 29, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
Just off the injured reserve, Joe Pereira helped the Augusta Lynx complete a come-from-behind victory over the Pensacola Ice Pilots on Saturday night with a late power play goal for a 3-2 road win.
Pensacola (0-3-1) dominated the first period scoring, starting with Corey Neilson's first of the year at 6:40 from Luke Fulghum and Brendan Cook. Neilson snuck in from the point, taking Fulghum's pass in the high slot and beating Lynx starter Trevor Cunning. Augusta then gave up a shorthanded marker for the second time in as many games as Nick Lindberg ripped a rocket from the left wing through Cunning at 16:53 to make it 2-0 Ice Pilots at the intermission.
The Lynx (3-1-1) would come back in the second period to tie the game starting at 3:05 with a Sam Ftorek power play goal from Ryan Lang and Shaun Fisher. Lang put the puck into the slot for Ftorek, who put a backhander past a surprised Todd Ford for the goal to make it 2-1. Then Brian Passmore would even the game off a Jamie Johnson pass as he banked the puck in off the right arm of Ford at 12:56, with Phil Cole also adding an assist.
A back and forth start to the third period saw both goaltenders make saves to keep their club tied, but finally the Lynx broke through with traffic and a bounce. Working their fifth power play of the game, Martin Lapointe's wrist shot into traffic was tipped by Pereira and found a way past Ford for the game-winning goal at 13:59 of the final frame. Fisher picked up his second assist of the night on the goal to propel the Lynx to the victory.
Pensacola did have a last gasp, however, forcing Augusta to kill off a six-on-three advantage in the waning seconds of the game. But Cunning made key saves down the stretch and the Lynx prevailed for the 3-2 final.
Cunning earned the win in his first pro start with 40 saves while Ford finished with 34 in the loss. Augusta's power play went 2-for-5 while Pensacola finished 0-for-6.
The Lynx are back in action this Friday and Saturday night in Florida as they battle the Everblades at 7:30 pm. The Classic Stucco and Stone Pre-Game Show kicks off one half-hour before game time on your Home for Lynx Hockey, NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630.
