Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs defeated the Indianapolis Indians, 3-1, at NBT Bank Stadium on Tuesday night. The win gives the Chiefs an International League-best 15 home wins in the 2016 campaign.
Syracuse (19-12) was held scoreless through the first four innings. The Chiefs mustered only two hits in the first four frames off Indians' starter Wilfredo Boscan.
Indianapolis (15-15) was also held without a run through the first four innings. But the Indians had baserunners in all four frames. In the top of the first Adam Frazier and Josh Bell had back-to-back singles with one out. A line-drive double play to first base off the bat of Jason Rogers, however, ended the threat.
Voth worked out of trouble again in the top of the fourth frame. Max Moroff reached on a passed ball after striking out to lead off the inning. He then stole second and reached third base on a sacrifice bunt from Danny Ortiz. With one out and Moroff on third, Voth struck out both Ed Easley and Boscan to retire the side.
Syracuse opened the scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brian Goodwin led off with an infield single. Pedro Severino followed with a sacrifice bunt, moving Goodwin to second. With one out, Ramsey singled into center field, scoring Goodwin, who beat out a play at the plate on a throw from Adam Frazier.
Voth's night finished after six scoreless innings. The Syracuse right-hander allowed six hits while striking out seven. Voth has yet to allow an earned run at NBT Bank Stadium this season. On the opposite side, Boscan went six innings, allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts.
The Chiefs got back on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning. Curtis Partch entered in relief of Boscan and issued a leadoff walk to Jason Martinson. Brian Goodwin followed with a deep fly out to center field. Following the out, Martinson stole second base, tallying his second steal of the year. Severino then struck out swinging. After the strikeout, Partch exited the game in favor of southpaw Kelvin Marte. The next batter, Caleb Ramsey, followed with a hard-hit double off the right-center field wall, scoring Martinson, giving Syracuse a 2-0 advantage.
Indianapolis answered with a run in the top of the eighth inning off reliever Trevor Gott. Frazier was set down on strikes to lead off the inning, but Gott hit the following batter Bell. Jason Rogers singled into center field in the next at-bat, with Cole Figueroa fouled out to third base to follow. With runners on first and second and two outs, Moroff hit a floating fly-ball single into center field, scoring Bell from second. Gott retired Ortiz on a groundout to second base to retire the inning, with the Chiefs leading 2-1.
Syracuse added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs and Matt den Dekker on second base, Matt Skole hit a single into left field, plating den Dekker, giving the Chiefs a 3-1 lead. The single extended Skole's on-base streak to nine games.
Rafael Martin pitched a scoreless ninth for his second consecutive save against the Indians. The save was Martin's sixth on the season in seven tries.
The Chiefs are back in play Wednesday night for the third game of this four-game series against the Indians, the game time is set for 6:35. Aaron Laffey is slated to take the ball for Syracuse opposite Chad Kuhl of Indianapolis.
