(Moosic, PA) - Henry Owens picked up where he left off in his return to the Pawtucket Red Sox, tossing seven shutout innings to blank the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 3-0, on Tuesday at PNC Field.
Owens (2-1), making his first appearance since a three-start stint with Boston, allowed four hits in the 104-pitch outing, which lowered his ERA to 0.72. Owens struck out five and walked five in his fourth Triple-A start of the season and first since April 18.
Owens allowed at least one baserunner in each of the first four innings and walked the first two hitters of both the fourth and sixth innings, but held Scranton (17-16) off the scoreboard.
Pawtucket (15-17) graced the scoreboard in the second inning against RailRiders starter Kyle Haynes (1-1), when Rusney Castillo doubled and scored on a fielder's choice. Scranton (17-16) had an opportunity to prevent the run by turning an inning-ending, 1-6-3 double play, but shortstop Pete Kozma could not hold on to the ball and complete the turn.
The PawSox loaded the bases with three singles in the sixth inning, but Jantzen Witte grounded into a fielder's choice that kept the score 1-0.
Still clinging to a 1-0 lead, Pawtucket reliever Noe Ramirez entered the game in the eighth. Ramirez allowed back-to-back one out singles before Chris Parmelee knocked a hard groundball down towards first base. Chris Marrero made a great diving play to rob Parmelee of an RBI. Ramirez then struck out Eddy Rodriguez to preserve the 1-0 advantage.
The PawSox grabbed insurance in the ninth inning thanks to Witte's RBI double down the left field line and Sandy Leon's RBI triple to right-center field.
Pawtucket collected its first win of the season against Scranton and its fifth shutout of the year, the most in the International League North.
The PawSox play game three of their four-game series in Scranton on Wednesday evening at 6:35 p.m. Righthander Joe Kelly (0-0, 3.00) is scheduled to make the second start of his rehabilitation assignment for Pawtucket against RailRiders lefty Richard Bleier (1-0, 2.40). Radio coverage begins on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the PawSox radio network at 6:05 p.m.
