Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Louisville scored four unanswered runs Tuesday night in the eighth and ninth innings to defeat Toledo, 4-3, despite a pristine pitching performance by Toledo's Matt Boyd.
Toledo got the offense started in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 1-0. After Nate Schierholtz walked, Casey McGehee put a ball in play and a Louisville error allowed Toledo to manufacture an unearned run. The Mud Hens kept things rolling as Jordany Valdespin began a one-out rally in the bottom of the fifth with a sharp single to center field, which Wynton Bernard followed up with a seeing-eye single, setting the table for Cameron Maybin. Clutch-Cameron came through with a two-run double laced down the left field line to put Toledo up 3-0.
The tides seemed to turn in the bottom of the sixth inning when Toledo loaded the bases but was unable to drive across any runs, and then the Bats' offense came alive in the top of the eighth when Bobby Parnell allowed three runs on three hits and two walks, as Louisville tied it up, 3-3.
Louisville completed the comeback in the top of the ninth when Jermaine Curtis ripped a first pitch double off of Bruce Rondon to drive in Carlos Triunfel, giving the Bats a 4-3 lead, which was how things ended at Fifth Third Field.
Getting the win for Louisville, his second of the season, was Dayan Diaz who pitched the eighth and ninth innings while giving up two hits and striking out one. Louisville's starter Daniel Wright went five innings while allowing four hits, striking out two, and giving up three runs (two earned).
Matt Boyd had another tremendous pitching performance for the Mud Hens as he pitched 6.1 innings while scattering four hits, striking out four, and not allowing any runs, extending his scoreless streak to 14.1 innings. Also pitching out of the bullpen for the Hens was Logan Kensing who went 0.2 innings and struck out one.
The Mud Hens are back at it again Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field against the Bats with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch start.
