Norfolk Tides News Release

Charlotte twice rallied from late deficits to knock off Norfolk, sweeping the Tides in a doubleheader Tuesday night at Harbor Park.

In the opener, Charlotte took advantage of a key defensive miscue in the seventh inning to rally past the Tides, 4-3.

Norfolk led the contest 3-0 entering the seventh frame, but Charlotte mounted a four-run rally against Oliver Drake (0-1) to steal the win. With one out in the frame, Drake yielded two walks and a single to load the bases, and Jacob May then lined a run-scoring single to left field to pull the Knights to within 3-1. Tim Anderson followed with a potential game-ending double play grounder, but third baseman Jimmy Paredes had the ball deflect off of his glove into short left field, allowing two runs to score. J.B. Shuck then lofted a sacrifice fly to right field off of Zach Phillips, giving the Knights a 4-3 advantage.

The late rally spoiled an excellent outing from T.J. McFarland, who was making his first start of the year with Norfolk after being optioned from Baltimore. McFarland allowed just five hits over 5.1 shutout innings, walking one and striking out two while throwing 46 of his 73 pitches for strikes.

Paredes paced Norfolk's offense with two hits, as he doubled and scored in the first inning before belting a solo home run in the third frame - his second homer in 14 rehab games between Frederick, Bowie and Norfolk.

Xavier Avery led off the opener with a home run, his third homer of the season. Avery, who also walked in the contest, has now hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games with an at-bat, over which he's hit .320 (16-50) with three home runs, 12 walks and seven RBI.

In the nightcap, Charlotte overcame an early deficit by plating two runs in the sixth inning to edge the Tides, 3-2.

Norfolk led the contest 2-1 entering the sixth frame before the Knights rallied against Tides starter Odrisamer Despaigne (0-5). Danny Hayes led off the inning with a single before Jason Coats dropped down a bunt single that was then thrown into right field by Francisco Pena, putting runners on second and third with nobody out. Edgar Olmos was then summoned from the Norfolk bullpen to face Daniel Fields, but Fields lined a two-run single into right field to give the Knights the lead.

Charlotte's bullpen made the lead stand up, as Newport News native Will Lamb (1-0) and Brad Goldberg combined to throw 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to help give the Knights the doubleheader sweep.

Trey Mancini provided Norfolk's offensive highlight with a solo home run in the second inning, his second homer with the Tides and his ninth home run of the season. His nine homers between Bowie and Norfolk are now tied for the third-most in all of Minor League Baseball.

Dariel Alvarez added an RBI single for the Tides, who have now dropped five games in a row.

The two teams will continue their series Wednesday night from Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 6:35. Nick Additon (1-2, 2.86) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Terance Marin (1-3, 7.61). The first 5,000 fans Wednesday will receive a color-changing Tides cup courtesy of Autobell Car Wash.

Notes: Dariel Alvarez registered his fifth outfield assist of the season in the opener...Richard Rodriguez worked a scoreless inning in the nightcap, and he's now held IL batters to a .164 average (9-55) with 18 strikeouts this season...Garabez Rosa singled in game two to extend his hitting streak to six games...Norfolk went 2-for-9 with RISP in the twinbill and has now hit .129 (17-132) with RISP in its 22 losses this season.
