San Antonio Rampage News Release
MOLINE, Ill. - It didn't take long for the San Antonio Rampage to charge back into third place of the AHL West Division.
One night after slipping into fourth, the Rampage fought off a pesky Quad City Flames squad, and reclaimed third place in the West with a 4-2 triumph over their divisional foe Saturday night at the I Wireless Center.
The Rampage (29-15-3-6, 67 points) moved a point ahead of Peoria for third with the win, and trail the Rockford IceHogs by a mere three points thanks in large part to their tremendous play through the first 12 games of their Rodeo Road Trip. With just two contests remaining, the Rampage have gone 7-2-1-2 thus far, taking 17 of a possible 24 points to leapfrog Peoria and close in on Rockford.
The Rampage had all facets of the game clicking Saturday at Quad City, from penalty killing, to the power play, to goaltending.
Ryan Caldwell spurned the power play for the Rampage early on, blasting a 5-on-3 one-timer from the right circle into the net for a 1-0 advantage 5:55 into the opening frame. Matt Murley and Bryan Helmer assisted on the goal. It was the fourth point in two nights for Murley since returning from the parent Phoenix Coyotes and was Helmer's 34th assist with the Rampage, leaving him one away from entering the Top 10 in team history.
The Rampage called upon their special teams in a second period full of penalties.
They first killed off five-minute spearing major, and with seven seconds left on that penalty went on the power play after a hooking call on Quad City's Adam Pardy. Jon DiSalvatore made a milestone out of it, putting his 100th professional/AHL goal through the pipes for a 2-0 cushion halfway through the second period.
Chris Durno netted his third goal in two games 71 seconds later, again on the heels of a Pardy infraction. Durno grabbed the puck near the left wall, skated to the goal-line and blasted the eventual game-winner off Curtis McElhinney's pads and into the cage, ending the goaltender's night. Durno's 18th goal of the season tied him for the team-lead with Joey Tenute and was the 100th point of his AHL tenure. He has registered consecutive two-point games, leads the Rampage with 11 multiple-point nights and has tallied 20 points (10 goals, 10 assists) in the last 19 games. Nine of the 10 goals Durno has scored during that time have tied or won the game.
The Rampage held a 3-0 lead and were through all but four seconds of the 49 penalty minutes they served during the middle stanza when Pardy put Quad City on the board with 58 seconds left in the period.
Carsen Germyn brought Quad City within a goal, 3-2, scoring the fifth combined power-play marker of the night between the two teams at 2:34 of the final period, but David LeNeveu shut the doors thereafter.
LeNeveu made 35 saves on 37 chances - the third straight 35-save performance by Rampage netminders - to tie teammate Josh Tordjman for second in team history with 32 wins since joining San Antonio. He jumped into the Top 15 in the league in goals against average (2.54, 15th) and save percentage (.915, T-13th), while improving to 9-7-3 this season.
Coach Greg Ireland captured his 700th professional standings point as bench boss (313-214-47-11). Matt Keetley made six saves in place of McElhinney for Quad City.
The Rampage began the road trip last in the AHL on the power play away from home. Since, they've moved up 11 places, going 13-for-53 (24.5%) thru the first 12 games, and have connected on the man-advantage in four consecutive games. They have also killed penalties at an 81.4 percent clip so far during the road trip.
The Rampage look to sweep the two-game set with Quad City tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. at the I Wireless Center, where they are 3-0 this season.
