Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, VA - Marc Denis made a season-high 48 saves to lead the Norfolk Admirals (19-29-2-4) past the Worcester Sharks (21-24-3-3) 4-2 on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena.
The fast-paced, combative spirit of last night's third period carried over into the first period of tonight's game, as two fights broke out and Worcester fired a franchise-record tying 24 shots at Denis.
However, it was Norfolk that jumped out to the lead by the period's eighth minute. A David Schneider shot from the point was stopped by Worcester goaltender Thomas Greiss. The rebound came to Blair Jones, who kicked it into the goalmouth where Norm Milley was credited for the first goal of the game at 7:25.
The Admirals' lead doubled less than four minutes later. Jay Rosehill found the rebound of a Vladimir Mihalik shot in the goalmouth and quickly backhanded it into the cage at 12:22.
The Sharks tied the game with two special-teams goals 50 seconds apart in the latter stages of the opening frame. While skating on the power play, David Setoguchi emerged from the left corner and sent a shot through the five hole of Denis at 16:49.
Setoguchi then netted a shorthanded goal by finding his own rebound in the slot and backhanding it past Denis at 17:39.
The eventual game-winning goal came on a crisp passing play by Kyle Wanvig and an equally sharp finish by Paul Szczechura at 6:18 of the second stanza. Wanvig skated into the Worcester zone along the left wing and deked around a defender in the faceoff circle before sending a pass to Szczechura in the slot. Szczechura buried his tenth goal as an Admiral and twelfth of the season overall.
Denis shut out the Sharks for the remainder of the game, making 11 second-period and 15 third-period saves to make Szczechura's goal stand up. Wanvig cemented the victory with an empty-net goal with 21 seconds remaining for a 4-2 victory.
Denis ended with 48 saves on 50 shots - the highest opponent shot and goalie save total of the season. Greiss got the loss with 17 saves on 20 shots.
Norfolk was 0-5 on the power play. Worcester was 1-5.
The Admirals will now embark on a season-long nine-game, 17-day road trip commencing next Wednesday at Bridgeport. The Admirals, B2 Networks and Baxter's Sports Lounge will team up to bring two of those games back to Norfolk via the Admirals B2 Nights at Baxter's. The Admirals games at Bridgeport on Wednesday (2/20) and in Hartford on February 29 will be televised on the big screen at Baxter's Sports Lounge. Check out norfolkadmirals.com for more details.
