January 3, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Antonio Rampage News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Rampage (14-13-7-0) held a 3-0 lead in the second period, but fell to the San Diego Gulls (17-12-0-1) 4-3 in front of 3,955 at the AT&T Center on Sunday night. Chris Bigras tallied a goal and an assist, earning the Third Star of the Game. Hubert Labrie added two assists, and Spencer Martin finished with 28 saves on 32 shots.
The Rampage got on the board first, as Nikita Zadorov's cross-ice pass found its way to the stick of Borna Rendulic, who fired it past Matt Hackett to make it 1-0. Labrie's blast from the point was tipped in by Michael Schumacher at the 16:12 mark of the period to give the Rampage a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.
A great individual effort by Chris Bigras led to San Antonio's third unanswered goal of the day. Bigras maneuvered through the San Diego defense and backhanded the puck in, giving the Silver and Black a 3-0 lead at 4:17 of the middle frame.
The Gulls got two unanswered goals from Joseph Cramarossa and Antonie Langaniere in less than four minutes late in the period, and the Rampage carried a 3-2 lead into the final period.
San Diego evened game in the final stanza, as Brandon Montaur flipped the puck past Martin on the power play to make it a 3-3 game. Brian McGrattan tipped in a rebound from a shot by Mountour at 17:01 of the third to give the Gulls a 4-3 lead, and San Antonio was unable to score an equalizer, falling 4-3.
Quotable
"We have played better over this last stretch, but we have nothing to show for it. You keep harping on the fundamentals, the structure, and not allowing your compete and your energy to drop off."
-- Rampage coach Dean Chynoweth
Lineup Notes
San Antonio's lines remained nearly unchanged from Friday's matchup against the Gulls. Trevor Cheek played on the Rampage's fourth line with Troy Bourke and Dan Maggio. Spencer Martin made his seventh start in net.
