Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates (17-13-2-0) were unable to handle Lehigh Valley Phantoms (17-16-1-2) Sunday afternoon dropping a 2-1 decision at the Cross Insurance Arena.

The teams wasted no time picking up where they left off Saturday night.

A fast moving first period came to a halt when Cole Bardreau made a quick play from the right-wing circle and sent the first goal in for the Phantoms. The center's second of the season was assisted by Tyrell Goulbourne and Joe Rehkamp.

Lehigh Valley doubled its lead at 11:33 of the second when Danick Martel collected the puck on a Nick Cousins feed, and sent it in past Pirates' goaltender Sam Brittain.

The Pirates were forced to kill off a 55 second penalty to start the third period.

Phantoms' goaltender Jason LaBarbera was eyeing his second shutout of the season when Pirates' Shane Harper capitalized on an odd-man rush to cut the lead in half. His fifth goal of the season was assisted from Rocco Grimaldi and Dylan Olsen.

Despite firing 18 shots on net in the period, the Pirates were unable complete the comeback.

LaBarbera made 37 saves picking up his third straight win, improving to 4-7-0.

Brittain made 22 saves in the effort bringing the Gorham Savings Bank Saves for Charity total to $4,010 so far this season. The loss drops Portland to 18-13-1 on the season, while Lehigh Valley improves to 17-16-2-1.

The Pirates travel to St. John's next weekend to kick-off the second annual Eimskip Port-to-Port Challenge. The challenge returns to Portland for a two game series at Cross Insurance Arena on January 27 and 29. Get your tickets by calling 207-PIRATES or visit portlandpirates.com.
