Bakersfield, CA - The San Jose Barracuda (13-10-2-3, 31pts) presented by Barracuda Networks opened up the New Year with a 5-4 shootout decision over the host Bakersfield Condors (13-11-2-2, 30pts) in front of 5,016 fans at the Rabobank Arena on Saturday evening. The Barracuda host the Texas Stars on Sunday, Jan 3 at 5pm at the SAP Center.
Micheal Haley scored twice, John McCarthy and Bryan Lerg each added two assists while Aaron Dell stopped all seven shooters in the shootout for his 6th win of the season. Ryan Carpenter scored in his 2nd straight game and Barclay Goodrow scored his team leading 12th goal of the season as San Jose won their second straight game via the shootout. Matthew Ford scored twice for the host Condors and Laurent Brossoit made 38 saves in the shootout loss for Bakersfield as San Jose jumped into sole possession on 4th place in the Pacific Division.
Each team scored a goal in a physical first period as San Jose held an 11-4 shot advantage through 20 minutes of play. The Condors went ahead 1-0 at 6:03 after Matthew Ford (14th) intercepted an Aaron Dell clearing attempt and then ripped the puck top shelf past the Barracuda netminder. Barracuda forward Micheal Haley (8th) scored in his 3rd straight game as he fired home a rebound at 11:55 assisted by John McCarthy and Bryan Lerg. Alex Gallant (5th) dropped the mitts with captain Ryan Hamilton at 18:07 with Hamilton picking up an instigator and misconduct to close out a feisty opening frame.
Each team scored three goals in a high scoring second period. Micheal Haley (9th) sent a wicked shot past the blocker of goaltender Laurent Brossoit at 2:50 after a nice rush down the left wing side to give San Jose a 2-1 lead. The Condors tied it at 6:20 as Joe LaLeggia (4th) sent a shot from 40 feet past Dell on a rush down the middle. Marc-Olivier Roy (3rd) deflected home a point shot at 8:10 to give Bakersfield a 3-2 lead at 8:10. The Barracuda tied the score again at 9:26 as Barclay Goodrow (12th) scored his team leading 12th goal of the season with a shot on the rush from the left wing side on the power play at 9:26. Ryan Carpenter (4th) deflected a Karl Stollery point shot past the Condors netminder at 11:11 on the power play to give San Jose a 4-3 advantage. But Bakersfield would tie the game again with a power play strike at 19:06 by Matthew Ford (15th) to close out a see-saw second period of play. The score was tied 4-4 after 40 minutes with San Jose holding a 22-15 shot advantage through two periods of play.
San Jose outshot Bakersfield 12-3 in a scoreless 3rd period but Aaron Dell made a breakaway save on Ryan Hamilton with five minutes remaining and stopped Josh Currie point blank to force overtime.
The Barracuda had several chances to win the game in overtime as they outshot the Condors 8-3 in the extra frame as the game headed to the shootout. In the shootout, the first 13 skaters were all denied by Dell/Brossoit before Jeremy Langlois won the game in the 7th round as the Barracuda took home a wild 5-4 victory.
