Rampage Fall at Texas Stars, 4-1

CEDAR PARK, Texas (January 26, 2013) - The San Antonio Rampage (18-22-0-4) couldn't complete the weekend sweep of the league leading Texas Stars (26-12-4-2), as the Rampage fell, 4-1, on Saturday night at Cedar Park Center. The Rampage split the weekend series with the Stars and have alternated wins and losses in their last 10 games (5-5-0-0) leading into the All-Star Break.

Forward Casey Wellman tallied the lone goal of the night for the Rampage while on the power play. The goal was Wellman's first on the power play this season and the winger now has 10 points (four goals, six assists) in his last 14 games.

Netminder Jacob Markstom was again solid between the pipes for the Rampage. He turned aside 39 shots in the defeat and has stopped 154-of-162 shots in his last four starts. The game marked only the second time in the last nine starts that Markstrom has allowed more than two goals.

Texas opened up the scoring at 11:45 of the opening frame when Justin Dowling walked in on Markstrom and shelfed a shot over the Rampage netminder. When scoring the first goal of the game, the Stars are now 12-0-0-1 this season.

Markstrom made a tremendous post-to-post save less than two minutes later when he denied Luke Gazdic on a cross-crease pass that looked to be a sure goal.

Dowling once again lit the lamp for the Stars at 19:45, again with an assist from Alex Chiasson, to give the Stars a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission. At the end of the opening frame, the Rampage were outshot, 15-8.

San Antonio made it a 2-1 game with their second power-play goal of the weekend. Rampage rookie Jonathan Hazen made a strong play along the boards to find Greg Rallo on the hashmarks of the right circle. Rallo slid a pass to Wellman, who one-timed the puck past Stars goaltender Richard Bachman at 7:41.

Texas responded with a power-play goal of their own at 9:35, as Dowling completed the hat trick to give the Stars a 3-1 lead at the second intermission. After two periods of play, the Rampage were outshot, 27-13.

The Rampage had a great opportunity to make it a one-goal game midway through the final frame when they had a 5-on-3 power play for 1:03. After good puck movement, Greg Rallo fired a shot that rang off the post, however the Rampage were unable to convert with the two-man advantage.

Markstrom made several saves down the stretch of the game to keep the Rampage in it, but San Antonio was unable to solve Bachman. Stars forward Toby Petersen added an empty-net goal with under a minute remaining to secure the victory.

The Stars have won 11 of their last 13 games to claim first place outright in the Western Conference, and the league. The Rampage were outshot, 43-24, on the night and San Antonio went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Texas was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.

The Rampage will return home to play their third annual Pink in the Rink game on Friday, Feb. 1 against the Rockford Ice Hogs at 7:30 p.m. on a KZEP Dollar Drink Night. The Rampage will skate on pink ice and auction off pink-themed jerseys after the game with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the breast health awareness efforts.
