Rampage Claim 2-1 Overtime Win Over Texas
January 26, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Antonio Rampage News Release
SAN ANTONIO - Forward Jon Rheault tallied the game-winning goal with 41 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Rampage a 2-1 win over the Texas Stars on Friday night in front of 9,389 fans at AT&T Center.
The win was San Antonio's first against the Stars this season (1-5-0-0) and the Rampage have now won eight of their last 10 home games, outscoring opponents 30-20 in that span. The victory came against the division and conference leading Stars, who had won nine of their last 11 games entering the contest.
The two teams combined for a total of 54 penalty minutes on 20 penalties, but the Rampage were able to hold the league's best road power play to 0-for-5 on the night. Entering the game, Texas had recorded a power-play goal in 13 of their last 15 games. However, it was San Antonio that converted with the man-advantage, as Rheault's game winner came while on a 4-on-3 power play in overtime.
Rampage netminder Jacob Markstrom made 35 saves on 36 shots and hasn't allowed more than two goals in seven of his last eight games. In his last three starts, Markstrom has stopped 115 of the last 120 shots he has faced.
Three rookies combined for the Rampage's first goal of the night at 1:01 of the first period. Defenseman Alex Petrovic broke the puck out of the zone and found Jared Gomes streaking through the neutral zone. Gomes collected the pass and dished it off to Jonathan Hazen, who took the puck down the right wing and fired a shot that beat Stars netminder Richard Bachman shortside.
The goal marked Hazen's second of the season and first since Nov. 30, while the assist marked Petrovic's third point in the last three games (one goal, two assists).
The Rampage were outshot, 12-8, in the opening frame but held a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission. When leading after the first period of action, San Antonio is now 10-2-0-2 on the season.
Texas tallied the only goal of the middle frame when defenseman Tyler Sloan walked in on Markstrom and beat the Rampage netminder high at 17:38.
San Antonio opened the third period with great jump and Petrovic made a great pinch while on the power play and rang a shot off the post three minutes into the frame.
Midway through the period, Markstrom made several saves while the Stars were on the power play to keep the game tied at 1-1. The Rampage were outshot, 14-8, in the final frame but Markstrom kept the door shut to force overtime.
Texas took a penalty at 3:07 of the overtime session and Rheault netted his team-leading 15th goal of the season from the high slot at 4:19 to secure the victory for the Rampage.
The Rampage and Stars will wrap up the two game home-and-home series tomorrow (Saturday) night at Cedar Park Center at 7:00 p.m. The Silver and Black will return to the AT&T Center on Friday, Feb. 1 for their third annual Pink in the Rink night to support breast health awareness. The Silver and Black will square off against the Rockford Ice Hogs on Pink in the Rink night at 7:30 p.m. on a KZEP Dollar Drink Night.
Individual, and season, tickets start at $10 and can be purchased at the AT&T Center Southeast Box Office, by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554 or online at sarampage.com.
