Albany Devils News Release
ALBANY, NY - Not only did the Albany Devils secure the Time Warner Cable Cup with a 5-2 victory against the Adirondack Phantoms, but they did so in front of a record crowd of 10,218 Saturday at Times Union Center. Harri Pesonen led the charge as the Devils improved to 6-1-0-1 against their Northway Rival this year.
Entering the AHL All-Star break, Albany now owns a 17-14-1-8 record. Saturday's crowd, which was the largest for an Albany AHL game since Feb. 27, 1999 (13,146), sends the Devils into a stretch of six straight road games, beginning Friday at Providence - the home of the All-Star Classic.
Pesonen's performance was the first multi-goal showing of his career, giving him nine goals for the season. Steve Zalewski, Bobby Butler and Darcy Zajac also contributed tallies and Phil DeSimone, Eric Gelinas and Tim Sesito each posted a pair of helpers.
In goal, Keith Kinkaid improved to 14-8-4 by turning aside 26 saves for his second consecutive victory.
The Devils took control of the game with goals early and often. Zalewski opened the scoring by redirecting a Gelinas shot at 4:02 of the first. Pesonen extended the lead to 2-0 by using quick hands in front of the net at 10:55 and Butler netted the eventual game-winner off a rebound at 14:30.
The Phantoms (17-21-2-1) got on the board with a power-play goal by Marcel Noebels at 12:11 of the second, before Pesonen responded with Albany's own man-up tally at 4:07 of the third.
Adirondack's Danny Syvret made the score 4-2 with a power-play goal at 6:30, but Zajac - with the help of Sestito - concluded the scoring with an empty-net, shorthanded goal at 19:47
After a brief hiatus for the 2013 Dunkin' Donuts AHL All-Star Classic, the Devils return to action Friday at the Providence Bruins at 7:05 pm. Fans can follow the action on 104.5 "The Team" ESPN Radio or online at ahllive.com.
