Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
TORONTO, Ontario - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins headed into the AHL All-Star Break having won six of their last seven games after defeating the Toronto Marlies, 3-1, on Saturday at Ricoh Coliseum.
The Penguins' Riley Holzapfel would break up the scoreless tie at 11:21 of the second period as he used a Marlies defenseman as a screen to beat goalie Mark Owuya to the stick side for his 13th goal of the season.
Toronto was able to knot the game in the third period, skating on a 4-on-3 advantage. Tim Connolly ripped a puck through traffic from the high slot that got by Jeff Zatkoff to make the score, 1-1.
It took just 59 seconds for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to regain the lead with Paul Thompson forcing a turnover and rifling a shot that clipped off of Owuya's glove and into the net. The unassisted tally was his 14th of the season and fourth game-winning goal for the Penguins, both tops on the team.
Adam Payerl helped the Penguins build a two-goal cushion during a power play late in the game. The rookie center worked the puck into the Marlies zone and fired a low shot before depositing the rebound with 5:28 left in regulation.
Zatkoff raised his record to 13-12-0 with 27 saves in the contest. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went 7-4-0-0 in the month of January.
