Kuemper Leads Aeros over Griffins 1-0

Grand Rapids, MI - The Houston Aeros (20-15-4-3, 47 points) defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins (24-13-2-2, 52 points) 1-0 on Friday night in front of 10,834 fans at Van Andel Arena. Houston goalie Darcy Kuemper (7-4-0) stopped all 28 Griffins shots, including ten shots in the third period, preserving his third shutout of the season. Forward Justin Fontaine delivered the game's lone goal, helping the Aeros post back-to-back road wins and improve to 8-9-2-1 away from home. Grand Rapids goalie Petr Mrazek (14-6-1) suffered the loss, allowing one goal on 27 shots. Houston will play in Grand Rapids at 6 p.m. (CT) on Saturday.

After a scoreless first period of play, Houston claimed the lead late in the second period off Justin Fontaine's ninth goal of the season. Aeros forwards Nick Palmieri and David McIntyre worked the puck to the Grand Rapids net. McIntyre's shot was blocked by Griffins goalie Petr Mrazek and the rebound fell to the goal line. Fontaine jammed in the loose puck for the 1-0 lead at 17:03 of the second period, breaking the scoreless tie.

Houston concludes a five-game road trip on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Grand Rapids against the Griffins. The team returns to Toyota Center after the All-Star break, hosting Texas on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.
