Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers struggled to find any rhythm at the plate in a 4-1 loss to Reno at Cheney Stadium on Monday night.

The Rainiers were held to just three hits in the outing, with the team‘s only run coming in the bottom of the ninth off a solo home run from catcher Eliezer Alfonzo. Reno now takes a 2-1 series lead over Tacoma in the four-game series between the two teams.

The Aces offense utilized the long ball to sink the Rainiers, including two in the top of the fifth inning that led to a quick 3-0 lead. Third baseman Yunesky Sanchez blasted a two-run shot in the Aces third at-bat in the inning, with outfielder Chris Rahl chipping in a solo shot one out later.

Reno struck again in the eighth after Ryan Roberts hit a sacrifice fly to right field that drove in outfielder Doug Deeds from third base.

Alfonzo proved to be one of the few bright spots in a tough night at the plate for the Rainiers after belting the home run in the ninth. Sanchez was the offensive leader for the Aces in the outing after going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.

Rainiers starter Michael Pineda was dealt his second loss with Tacoma this season after surrendering three runs on five hits over six innings of work with one walk and seven punchouts.

Right-hander Zach Kroenke picked up his third win of the season after holding the Rainiers scoreless through five innings, while walking three and fanning five.

The Rainiers close out their homestand against Reno at 11:30am on Tuesday looking for a series split. Right-hander Blake Beaven (0-0, -.--) goes to the mound for Tacoma in his first career Triple-A appearance, with right-hander Josh Collmenter (3-2, 5.40) scheduled to start for the Aces.
