Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - Omaha Royals starter Philip Humber today was named the Pacific Coast League's Pitcher of the Week. He became the third Omaha pitcher in as many weeks and fourth Royals player this season to earn weekly honors from the league office.
Humber threw a complete game, four-hit shutout last Friday at Nashville, leading the Royals to a 3-0 victory. He gave up four singles and two walks, while striking out seven to post Omaha's seventh shutout of the year, the first that was not a combined effort by more than one pitcher. It was the first nine-inning, complete game shutout by an Omaha pitcher since Bruce Chen went the distance for a three-hitter on June 19, 2009, in a 4-0 win at Albuquerque.
Humber's win Friday was his first since May 30 vs. Round Rock. In ten games (nine starts) since then, the 27-year old right-hander had gone 0-3 with a 6.14 ERA. In his last three starts prior to Friday, he had only logged a total of eight innings; one of his starts was shortened by injury and another was abbreviated when he was ejected for arguing balls and strikes.
Humber is in his first season in the Royals organization after being signed by Kansas City as a minor league free agent last December. On the year, he's 5-6 with a 4.47 ERA in 21 games, with all but one of them starts.
He has spent parts of the past four seasons in the Major Leagues, pitching for the New York Mets (2006-2007) and Minnesota Twins (2008-2009). A native of Nacogdoches, Texas, Humber starred at Rice University from 2002-2004. He was a member of the Owls' 2003 National Championship team, tossing a complete game five-hitter in a 14-2 win over Stanford in the final game of the best-of-three championship series at the College World Series. He was the Mets' 1st round pick (3rd overall) in the 2004 draft.
Humber follows Royals pitchers Greg Holland and Gaby Hernandez as recipients of Pitcher of the Week honors the past three weeks. Alex Gordon was named PCL Batter of the Week for the week that ended May 16th.
The PCL Batter of the Week for last week is Iowa first baseman/outfielder Bryan LaHair. In six games, he was 10-for-22 (.455) with two doubles, four home runs and 14 RBI. LaHair belted three homers, driving in seven runs in the Cubs' 15-7 win Saturday at Oklahoma City.
The Royals' next home game is Wednesday, August 4th at 7:05 p.m. vs. the Portland Beavers. That opens an eight-game homestand at Rosenblatt Stadium, with the Royals hosting Portland and the Tacoma Rainiers in a pair of four-game series.
